Legal/Immigration
In the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, faced with a profound need to combat widespread discrimination against Arab-Americans and Muslims, we created the Legal Services Program. Originally an information and referral program, it has evolved into a full-service initiative.
We can guide family members through the American legal system, providing information, consultation, and (in some cases) representation. We offer support services for proceedings, such as escorting people to court and to other government agencies, translations and interpretations.
We can assist with the naturalization process and the range of immigration-related issues: we review Citizenship and Green Card applications, assist people in completing them, and provide follow-up. We help with visa applications and in securing employment authorization.
Other issues for which we may be called on include landlord-tenant conflicts, domestic violence and other family-related legal problems, and access to public benefits.
We encourage the community to report infringements and to pursue any available remedies.
We seek to protect the legal rights of Arab immigrants in the United States who have been required to comply with the National Security Entry/Exit Registration System (NSEERS). We offer free consultations on the implications of Special Registration.
We also hold legal education workshops in collaboration with various government agencies, and offer an array of printed material.
