Hello All!

I am very excited to be joining the staff of AAFSC as an AmeriCorps VISTA, Youth Programs Development Assistant. AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program designed to fight poverty in America. I will be working for the next year with AAFSC in expanding the afterschool program and designing a nutrition curriculum for kids involved in the program. I’m going to be writing a monthly blog about my experiences with AAFSC.

So far I have gotten to spend a little time with some of the children involved in our youth program at the summer camp led by Youth Program’s Manager, Jake. They played games, made arts and crafts, and had an Arabic lesson. Some of the girls and I talked about our shared interest in pop music group “One Direction”, including their favorite band member, Zayn, who they were eager to tell me is Muslim like them!

A little about myself. I’m a recent graduate of the University of Vermont where I majored in History, with a concentration in the Middle East, and minored in International Studies. I just moved to New York a few weeks ago and am very much enjoying getting to know this wonderful city.

Looking forward to working with this great organization!
