MLK Day Food Drive at AAFSC!

January 27, 2014

To celebrate the National Day of Service, our AmeriCorps VISTAs Jake and Jacob coordinated a month-long food drive to provide for the immigrant and underserved communities with which we work.

With support from the Khalil Gibran International Academy, Brooklyn Friends School, Trader Joe’s, local businesses and committed community members, the Arab-American Family Support Center collected over 580 food items for those in need this winter.

On Martin Luther King, Jr Day, we opened our doors and transformed our office into a temporary food distribution center. Volunteers from our Youth Program took advantage of their day off and helped us give out essential provisions to our clients and students.

So far, we have distributed food to 25 families (nearly 130 people), and our shelves are not yet empty!

Thanks to the AmeriCorps program and our two awesome VISTAs, we were able to offer this wonderful opportunity for the community.
