Meet Lourdes and José

July 20, 2022

Lourdes and José are from Puerto Rico. Like many immigrants, they were unsure about the best food decisions for their family. Fresh, nutritious food is important for well-being, but it is not always accessible for families because of their low-income status and living in food deserts.

Buying groceries can be hard as immigrants. AAFSC taught us the importance of nutrition and helped us get Health Bucks to purchase fresh food and keep our family healthy.

AAFSC is proud to provide Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) enrollment at our Center that provides food assistance for nearly 1.8 million low-income New Yorkers like Lourdes and José. We helped them sign up for Health Bucks which gives them access to fresh foods at farmer’s markets for an affordable price.

In addition to their Health Bucks, Lourdes and José have benefited greatly from learning English in our morning ESOL classes, to which their granddaughter Natalia tags along, and our health-based workshops, which cover information on diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. By learning about well-being and best food practices, Lourdes and José have been empowered to make healthy decisions for themselves and their family.

We are so proud of them and look forward to continue walking alongside them on their journey to a healthier lifestyle!
