Meet Susanna, a student in our Adult Education and Literacy Classes who’s been coming to our center consistently for three years. Moving to New York from her native Mexico wasn’t the easiest transition – she, like many immigrants, came to the U.S in search of a better life for her family.
Upon arriving to the United States, Susanna quickly learned the life she sought wouldn’t come easily, especially as a Spanish speaker. With two young children, Susannna knew the key to helping herself, as well as her family, was to break the language barrier that prevented her from thriving in this country.
Signing up for our Adult Education and Literacy, and Citizenship Prep classes was the exact stepping stone Susanna needed to reach her goals. Thanks to our culturally competent curriculum and our patient teachers and volunteer tutors, she recently passed her Citizenship Exam and used her English skills to land a job interview. To her, the biggest achievement of all was more personal. She can now communicate more effectively with her children’s teachers and is confident attending Parent-Teacher conferences.
I can now be the advocate my children need at school. I’m so proud of how far I’ve come.
